We have received many of the promotions - they seem to be small fast melting tablets which one applies to coffee. The active ingredients are claimed to be orthosiphon and HCA (hydroxycitric acid).

Orthosiphon is a plant species and is sometimes referred to as "cat's whiskers". There is some traditional use of this product as a diuretic; there is no scientific information about its legitimate use as a weight loss product.

The HCA is hydroxy citric acid, which supposedly is obtained from the fruit of Garcinia Cambogia. Hydroxy citric acid began to show up in the early 1990's as a weight loss agent.

Dr. Thomas Wheeler is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with the University of Louisville School of Medicine. In the late 1990's Dr. Wheeler reviewed all the scientific literature available on hydroxy citric acid as a weight loss agent. His conclusions were that while there is some evidence that HCA may act as a weight loss agent in animals through reducing food intake, the usefulness of this product in humans remains to be demonstrated. The call center is in another eastern U.S. state. It is a large call center, and handles all kinds of mail order products.
